Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking soundbites to support it. “Wouldn’t you say,” she asked, ‘that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?” No, I said, I wouldn’t say that. “But what about ‘The Basketball Diaries’?” she asked. “Doesn’t that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machinegun?”

The obscure 1995 Leonardo DiCaprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office and it’s unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.

The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. Kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”

In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, “The NBC Nightly News” and other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them.

The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.

I’m highly skeptical whether or not Roger Ebert actually said this and had this interview. It’s likely he did, because I’m not well-educated in his thoughts and ideals. Either way, I consider this a powerful statement about the media. Therefore, I believe it is worth sharing.

Tumblr is beginning to spoil everything related to Doctor Who for me. But then again, I don’t have a television. So how am I supposed to remember when there is a new episode?

tmalak00:

When I know in the depths of my being a certain truth, there is always something trying to inhibit the formation of a perfect communion.

In my faith, its an overbearing rule and the forced devotion to a particular denomination.

In my calling, its forced schooling.

In love, its poor timing.

I…

A few years ago, I discovered the name Joel means “Jehovah is God” in the modern translation. Take the original Hebrew into account, it is “YHWH is God.”

To share such a connection with the Most High and his chosen people with whom I have no blood relation to means something. The prophet Joel was one of doom and redemption. In the beginning of his book, he talks about sin and destruction, and the judgment of God.

Then he talks about a new generation. “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” (Joel 2:28) So many times, when I was just a boy, ministers who were friends of the family would often quote this to me. It was as if they tried to speak the calling of a pastor or prophet into my life.

The apostle Peter quoted this scripture on the Day of Pentecost to the thousands of people who witnessed him and the disciples praying in languages they themselves did not know. This was the evidence to them that the Holy Spirit had come to them. They were in the last days as described. Such a burden was too great for me to carry alone. This generation will no longer listen to a prophet if he comes from the pulpit. The sanctuary of the people today is in a place of escapism. We should infiltrate such a place as Paul did and bring the Gospel to them. How do they know to follow the Light when they have never seen it? They don’t even recognize it for what it is.

So I was shopping at a locally-owned bookstore today and picked up their copy of “Doctor Who: Dark Horizons” off the shelf. One of the owners had taped this picture to the shelf behind the book:

I screamed so loud everyone in the store turned to stare at me. The owner thought it was hilarious. This is why I have trust issues.

Awful. I would probably crap my pants!

Doctor Who: New Series 7.2 BBC One Launch Trailer

And here is the second of two new trailers out today.

Both have new (and different) footage.

We don’t know about you but we will be watching these over and over again all day.

And our regrets will be of the nothing variety.

Oh. My. Gosh.
